Spiral Design Studio Takes Top Honor at NORI’s

“The Spiralizer”, Spiral Design Studio’s holiday self-promotion, took best of show, or the Betsy, at the 33rd annual NORI Awards. The Spiralizer bested 470 entries submitted by more than 300 Capital Region advertising agencies, graphic designers, and audio video production agencies.

The Story of the Spiralizer
Spiral Design, known for their unique and experiential design, created a conceptual story and employed unusual design and production methods to bring the Spiralizer to life.
The Spiralizer was sent to the recipient by the Spiral global expedition team. A letter from the team, typed on an antique typewriter, tells the story of the Spiralizer -- a mysterious “fortune telling” machine -- that was unearthed by the team and sent to the recipient for safekeeping.
The Spiralizer arrived in a plain brown package and was wrapped in muslin cloth and natural hemp cord -- items that are reminiscent of packaging used to ship archaeological artifacts. The piece features hand-drawn illustration, painted on recycled barn board and secret coded messages that can only be decoded with the “Spectrucle” decoder accessory that is constructed of wood paper and acetate.
Spiral Design created the Spiralizer in collaboration with Ken Gasch, who builds the mechanical devices for his own business, HLD productions.

In addition to the Betsy, Spiral Design Studio received additional NORI awards for the 1st Playable “Dynamic Duo” holiday promotion; Southwestern Vermont Healthcare “Emergency” fundraiser promotion; SI Technologies corporate brochure and DVD; and the 2005 Larkfest poster.
Spiral won the Betsy in 2000 for the Albany Medical College Viewbook. Another self-promotion, “Dr. Bob’s Bona Fide Box of Solutions,” won a 2003 regional Ad Club award and went on to win a world-wide ADDY award the same year.
