Spiral Design Studio Adds Martial Arts to PortfolioEmployees and company benefit from Martial Arts classes offered by the firm.
 Spiral Design Studio, the region’s most respected creative marketing firm, has added Martial Arts to their company portfolio. That’s right, Martial Arts.
On Saturday, May 7, two members of the Spiral Team earned their black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Robert Clancy, principal, and Neil Wright, creative director, have studied the art for over four years. Clancy is also a first-degree black belt in Combat Hapkido, a cumulative Martial Art with an exclusive focus on self-defense.
The pair are among four Spiral employees who take part in the sport at Columbia Tae Kwon Do, under the direction of Master Tae Yun, in East Greenbush, N.Y. Jeanie Guity, art director, is currently a brown belt and Beth Dawson, marketing director, recently earned her yellow belt in both Tae Kwon Do and Combat Hapkido.

The firm has long been regarded as an example in creating a corporate culture that marries personal fulfillment and professional collaboration, striking a balance between work and personal life. Clancy and partner Lauren Payne chose to offer Martial Arts to all Spiral employees – paid for by the studio – because of the physical, and intellectual benefits the discipline provides to participants. In recent years, the Studio has landed international clients such as Citi Bank and received prestigious regional to international industry awards – positioning the Studio to increase personnel and expand it’s infrastructure. Spiral is currently opening a second office this summer in Westchester, N.Y. Clancy attributes the firm’s success, in part, to the study of Martial Arts.
“Martial Arts is all about leadership, self-control and having the confidence to take on any challenge placed in front of you,” said Clancy. “My employees are now equipped with exceptional skills to deal with any unexpected situation – this is something all businesses can benefit from.”
The firm has also sponsored other recreational, health, and wellness initiatives and semi-annual retreats for the Spiral team as well as their spouses and significant others.
“Robert and Lauren strongly believe that we must be content in our personal lives in order to be effective in our professional lives,” said Wright, who has worked at Spiral Design since 1995. “Participating in activities together outside of work makes our group more cohesive and collaborative in the studio.”
